History & Origin
Gulab jamun developed in the Indian subcontinent from Persianate milk sweets and syrup-soaked fritters. The name joins Persian words for rosewater and a dark fruit; the dessert is made from milk solids fried slowly and soaked in cardamom-rose syrup.
